Viviamo in Arabia Saudita da 30 mesi, il primo progetto fotografico è stato completato: è ora di fare il bilancio di un anno visto in 366 foto. Si perchè tra l'altro il 2016 è stato bisestile e quindi, per chi avesse deciso di imbarcarsi in un progetto simile è stata fatica aggiuntiva. Ne è valsa la pena?
In Saudi Arabia since 30 months now, first photographic project completed: time for a review of this year through 366 photos. Besides all 2016 was a leap year therefore, for those who decided to undergo a project like this, it's been additional effort. Was it worth it?
Gli aspetti positivi e quelli negativi di un progetto fotografico devono essere valutati a sangue freddo: ora a circa una settimana dalla chiusura, mi sento pronto. Si parte!
Positive and negative aspects of a photographic project have to be assessed in clod-blood mode. Now, after a week from the project close-out I am ready. Let's go!
Aspetti positivi - Positive Aspects
Preparare un progetto ha richiesto una fase di studio approfondito: come riuscire a tirare fuori una foto al giorno, almeno. Come lavorare le foto in modo da farle sembrare parte di un lavoro senza mortificarne le singolari peculiarità. Cosa farne delle foto: lasciarle sul PC, fare un sito, fare un blog, stamparle. Tutte opzioni valutate e sperimentate. Questa necessaria progettualità mai provata prima così a fondo è in assoluto il primo aspetto positivo del progetto.
Setting up a photographic project required a deep study phase: how to get one picture a day, at least. How to post process the pictures to give them a final look that makes the part of a work without sacrificing their singular characteristics. What to do with the pictures: leave the on the PC, create a site, create a blog, print them. All these options have been evaluated and experienced. Well exactly this projectized approach to photogaphy never tried before so deeply is, by far, the one positive aspect of this project.
1) Fatte più foto: l'esercizio rende perfetti. Nel mio caso non so se sono migliorato ma mi sono divertito di più. Portare la macchina sempre dietro mi ha permesso di fotografare molte volte situazioni che altrimenti mi sarei perso. Spingermi a visitare posti che altrimenti non avrei avuto la curiosità di vedere (tipo i vicoli di Jubail o di Gedda) mi ha arricchito immensamente.
1) Shot many more pics: exercise makes you perfect. In my case I am not sure I have improved but for sure I enjoyed more. Have my camera always with me allowed to take pictures I'd have otherwise missed. Push myself to visit places that I'd have not hade the curiosity to see (such as the Jubail or Jedda backstreets) enriched me greatly.
2) Coerenza in un pre-set: una delle mie fissazioni fino al 2015 è stata la 'coerenza' estetica. Immagini scattate in condizioni o momenti diversi e lavorate in post possono assumere aspetti significativamente diversi. La singola foto sarà forse bella ma la successione delle foto risulta poco armoniosa. Per mitigare l'effetto ho scelto di usare un preset e di simulare solo 3 o 4 pellicole. Ho scelto e provato vari preset ed alla fine ho comprato quello che mi è piaciuto di più.
2) Consistency through a pre-set: one of my obsessions till 2015 was aesthetic consistency. Pictures taken under different conditions and moment then worked in post-pro will lead to significantly different results. The single picture might result in a nice shot but the sequence is lacking harmony and balance. To mitigate this effect I chose to try a preset based on just 3 or 4 films. I chose and tested several presets, in the end I bought the package I liked the most.
3) Coerenza con un'ottica fissa: quasi mai ho utilizzato lo zoom. La stragrande maggioranza degli scatti sono stati fatti con 35 e 50mm (23 e 35 mm sulla Fuji) e sono soddisfatto del risultato ottenuto.
3) Consistency through a prime lens: most of the times I have avoided zoom lenses. The vast majority of shots were made with 35 and 50mm (23 and 35 mm with the Fuji camera) and I am happy with the result.
Aspetti negativi - Negative Aspects
Forse il termine è sbagliato: diciamo piuttosto, 'Dove voglio migliorare'Probably the wrong term: better say 'Where I want to Improve'
Dove voglio migliorare - Where I want to improve
1) Manca ancora il coraggio di scattare con le persone. Il posto dove vivo intimidisce un po' ma i blocchi sono sempre interni, il resto solo scuse. Voglio migliorare la capacità di stringere un rapporto col soggetto fotografato, limitare le foto rubate ed esplorare nuovi generi.
1) The courage to shoot is still not there: the Country I live in might scare a bit but blocks are always internal. The rest is just an excuse. I want to improve how I can connect to the subject and limit the number of stolen pictures and explore new kinds of photography.
2) Cosa farne delle foto: il blog va bene ma vorrei fare di più, forse un sito organizzato diversamente. Anche la stampa va migliorata: la Canon Selphy è ottima per quello che volevamo ma manca qualcosa. Forse un fotolibro. Questo è un punto da rivedere nel 2017.
2) What to do with the pictures: ok the blog but I want more, maybe a site, organized differently. Also how I am printing the pictures is to be reviewed: the Canon Selphy is excellent for what we wanted but still something is missing. A photobook? Maybe. This is an area to explore during 2017.
3) Temi inesplorati: ho lasciato indietro temi inesplorati, perchè più difficili ed in parte perchè richiedono contatto coi soggetti. Il 2017 colmerà questo vuoto.
3) Unexplored Themes: there are some unexplored themes I left behind. The reason is because they are harder to tackle and in part due to the need of more connection to the subjects. 2017 will close this gap.
