Day 5 - Segnali - Signs

Facciamo un giro fuori? Melinda ci da l'ok: possiamo andare.
Circa 15 minuti per fare 100 metri: meglio di così non riesco. Per ora. Fuori è primavera: è così bello che anche con le stampelle si sta bene. Piccolo sussulto passando vicino al campo da basket, acqua passata ormai pensiamo solo a recuperare. I ragazzini giocano con i genitori e il ristorante ha ospiti anche se è tardi: segni del venerdì che è arrivato, è l'inizio del weekend...lungo!!
Dopo un anno in questo compound riesco a cogliere altri segni, meno comuni. Ecco il più temuto di tutti: la carriola con sabbia e mattonelle davanti ad una casa*. Segno che l'impianto idraulico è da rifare... ma ora godiamoci il sole...

Shall we go for walk outside? Melinda gives us the green light: we can go.
15 Minutes for a 100 meters: can't do it better than that. For now. Outside it's Spring time: so nice it's lovely despite the crouches. Small wince approaching the basketball court, water under the bridge it's time to recover now. Kids are playing with their parents and the restaurant is entertaining guests regardless of the late hour: all signs that Friday is here, it's the beginning of the weekend... a long one!
After one year living in this compound I can recognize other signs, not so common. Here's the most feared: the wheelbarrow with sand and tiles laying in front of a Villa*. This sign means the plumbing needs to be refurbished... let's enjoy the sun now...

Day 4 - Sweet Christmas Present

Il primo giorno del 2016 in Arabia parte tardi, per ovvi motivi. Sveglia alle 12 (hey! siamo andati a dormire alle 5...) colazione con caffè e moka italiani, la nostra vicina Mimì che ci viene a salutare. Un bel sole primaverile ci scalda mentre continuiamo il relax in soggiorno parlando del più e del meno.

Suonano alla porta: un bel vassoio di cioccolatini per augurarci in ritardo 'Buon Natale' diventa un gradito 'Bentornati!' da parte del Compound Manager.

Our first day of 2016 in Saudi starts late for us, obvious are the reasons. Wake up at 12 (hey! we went to bed at 5...) an Italian coffee prepared with our moka, our neighbor Mimì comes meet us. A nice sun like spring time warms us while we keep on relaxing in the living room talking about everything and anything. Door bell rings: a tray of chocolate from the Compound Manager tells us a late 'Merry Christmas' and it also becomes a valued for us 'Welcome back'.

Day 3 - Back to the Kingdom

Il tempo vola e con lui anche noi. Partenza da Roma alle 16 ed arrivo al Compound alle 5 del giorno dopo. Freschi come due rose di campo. Quasi.

In aeroporto, tra i pochi vantaggi delle stampelle c'è l'estensione della condizione di 'frequent flyier' alla famiglia: taglio delle code e accesso alla lounge dell'aeroporto di Fiumicino. Excellent!

Sul fronte Middle-East nulla da segnalare: puntuali e cortesi come sempre e domani si ricomincia!

Time Flies and we must fly too. We are scheduled to leave Rome at 4 p.m. to arrive to our Compound at 5 a.m. As fresh as two wild roses. Almost like that.

At the Airport, amongst the few advantages brought to us because of my crouches, we get the frequent flyer bonuses extended to the both of us: fast track and airport loung access in Fiumicino. Excellent!

Middle-East side, nothing to declare: in-time and nice as usual, tomorrow we begin anew!

Oggi è il compleanno di Renato. Nel fermarci prima di incontrarlo abbiamo una buona occasione per fare una foto... come quache anno fà*.

Renato's birthday today. As we stop by before meeting him the chance is good to take a picture...just like a few years ago*.

In sintesi, le nostre vacanze di Natale 2015: non il massimo e tanti amici che non abbiamo potuto salutare. Ora pronti a tornare in Arabia!

Our Christmas Holidays 2015 in short: not the best possible and too many friends we couldn't visit. Now we are ready to go back to KSA!

To shoot ths one we used the XT-1 with 23mm, set on manual focus and used the Fujifilm Camera Remote Android app to shoot through our mobile.

Teo wanted to check all the equipment first. Once we got his OK we took the pictures!

La nitidezza delle immagini a volte è una fissazione, un esercizio di post-produzione sterile fatto da un fotografo amatoriale agli inizi.

Per me è stata affannosa ricerca del dettaglio esasperato, esaltato da filtri e maschere di contrasto in post-produzione. Senza criterio, senza un motivo, senza un obiettivo da raggiungere od un messaggio da mandare. Reazione alla paura dell'errore tecnico, di un tempo troppo lungo e mano poco ferma. Insicurezza sciocca di chi inizia a confrontarsi con i giudizi degli altri. E con i propri.

Garden arriva dopo, e supera questa paura. E' l'elogio dello sfocato, forme morbide ed atmosfere da sogno. Valorizzazione della luce rispetto alla forma, dell'insieme anziché del dettaglio, dell'evocazione soggettiva piuttosto che della testimonianza oggettiva.

Sharpness is many times an obsession, a sterile post-pro exercise of a beginner.
It was, for me, a laborious hunt for the finest detail, enhanced by using filters and constrast masks while editing the picture. No criteria, no actual reason, no goal to reach or message to send. A reaction to my fear of a technical error, a shutter speed set too low and a not so firm hand. Silly insecurity while I began to challenge my picture under the light of other people's judgements. And under my own judgement as well.

Garden comes later and goes beyond that fear. It is the praise of blur, soft shapes and dreamy atmospheres. Nurturing the light rather than the shape, the whole rather than the detail, the subjective meaning rather than the objective proof.

'Beat the Time' is the title of an art exhibition held in Bergamo during April 2013. The title was chosen to celebrate those art merchants that allowed the humanity to actually 'beat the time' by preserving important masterpieces.

Wandering through the streets of Bergamo and later that day, of Milan, many other ways to beat the time were disclosed to my eyes.
